Image
Travel blogger and computer security engineer Anil Polat created an interactive Google Map of WiFi passwords for airports and airport lounges around the world. Embedded below, the regularly updated map is expandable and zoomable. By clicking on the little airplane icon you can see the corresponding airport/lounge’s WiFi login/password. 4G LTE is Fading Away as Verizon Publishes Its 5G Radio Specs in the US

Image
Verizon started the 4G LTE ball rolling in the United States when the 4G LTE network was designed and still hoping to be the first in the United States to roll out the 5G Network. Yesterday, Verizon said it has completed its 5G radio specs; these specs will be used by manufacturers of Smartphones, suppliers of parts used to build out the 5G network, and others helping Verizon roll out and maintain 5G service. If you don't know before, data speeds for 5G are supposed to be approximately 100 times faster than that of 4G LTE. In February, Verizon partnered with Samsung on a 5G trial. And now that it has published its 5G specs, we could see the other major U.S. carriers looking forward to catch up with Verizon. Having learned from the experience of building its 4G LTE pipeline, here is what Adam Koeppe, Verizon's vice president of network technology planning said - "The completion of the 5G radio specification is a key milestone toward the development of a complete

An 8K Time-lapse of Patagonia

Image
If there’s one thing you can rely on us photographers for, it’s bleeding every last drop of quality out of our work. We feverishly pursue clarity like a commission-only ophthalmologist and over the last couple of years, time-lapse photography has been the most blatant exhibition of this.  Photographer Martin Heck  has presumably seen the bar that has been set for high quality time-lapses, and then promptly vaulted over it.  ‘Patagonia 8K’ is footage of Chile and Argentina shot over six weeks. What makes this special is not just the content and composition of the frames, but that the 100,000 images that make up this video are shot using the medium format  Pentax 645Z . The sense of scale and depth in this time-lapse is unparalleled and genuinely like nothing I have seen before. The only complaint from me is that most people – myself included – can’t even watch this masterpiece in its native resolution and quality, which is a tragedy in its own right. If you opt to watch this

Now you can finally use WhatsApp on Mac and Windows

Image
Here's how WhatsApp looks on the desktop. WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps on earth, introduced a fully functionally desktop app for Mac and Windows on Tuesday. The Facebook-owned messaging behemoth already offers a web version of its service, but this is the first time it's had a native app designed specifically for Macs and Windows PCs. "Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device,"  the company said on its blog . The desktop app supports notifications and keyboard shortcuts. You can  download WhatsApp's desktop app directly from its website  on Mac and Windows. WhatsApp has over 1 billion monthly active users, which makes its reach only second to Facebook itself.

Hilma Hooker Shipwreck, Bonaire

Image
The Hilma Hooker is a shipwreck in Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands. It is a popular wreck diving site. In the summer of 1984, the Hilma Hooker had engine problems at sea and was towed to the port of Kralendijk, Bonaire. It was already under surveillance by drug enforcement agencies. Docked at the Town Pier, local authorities boarded the ship for an inspection when her captain was unable to produce any of the requisite registration papers. A false bulkhead was discovered, and held within was 25,000 lb (11,000 kg) of marijuana. The Hilma Hooker and her crew were subsequently detained while the local authorities on Bonaire searched for the vessel's owners, who were never found. The Hilma Hooker came to rest on a sand flat between two coral reef systems in an area known to divers as Angel City. The wreck has subsequently become a prime attraction for scuba divers. It lies in approximately 100 feet (30 m) of water and at 240 feet in length provides ample scope for exp

Captain Don Stewart Memorial, Bonaire

Image
He has spent the greater part of his life in Bonaire taking visitors diving and successfully campaigning to protect the natural underwater wonders. Among his many accomplishments, Captain Don lead the campaign to ban spearfishing on Bonaire, instituted the first permanent mooring system which eliminated the need for boats to drop an anchor, founded the Council of underwater Operators, and implemented a mandatory orientation dive for all people diving on Bonaire. He is also responsible for opening the first hotel on the island, Zeebad, (which is now the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, and in 1976 he opened Captain Don’s Habitat, which introduced capse concept of “diving freedom,” diving 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. His contributions have been recognised by DEMA with the 1998 Reaching Out award, and by Bonaire with a bronze memorial plaque placed at Don’s Reef. Research provided by Cathy Church. Bonaire Natur - Gotomeer

Image
Gotomeer is a saltwater lagoon near the island's northern end and it is a flamingo hangout. Bonaire is one of the few places in the world where pink flamingos nest. The shy, spindly-leg creatures, affectionately called "pink clouds", are magnificent birds to observe. The best time to catch them at home is January to June, when they tend to their gray-plumed young. For the best view take the paved access road alongside the lagoon through the jungle of cactus to the parking and observation area on the rise overlooking the lagoon and Washington Slagbaai National Park beyond.

Slave huts & Obelisks, Bonaire Netherlands

Image
These huts were constructed in 1850 during the slavery time, and served as camping facilities for slaves working in the salt ponds to collect and ship the salt, one of Bonaire's most important export product. These huts were used as sleeping quarters and place to put away personal belongings of the working team. Each Friday afternoon the slaves walked seven hours to Rincon to weekend with their families, returning each Sunday. Four Obelisks on Bonaire were used as navigational shore markers to guide ships coming in to load. The obelisks were painted red, white, blue and orange (the colours of the Dutch flag).

Earn 2GB of Google Drive space for checking your security settings

Image
To properly celebrate  Safer Internet Day , Google is offering a nice perk for users who complete a quick security checkup. If you're willing to make sure your account recovery info is up to date, review recent log-in activity and confirm the list of apps that access your account details, the folks in Mountain View will add 2GB to your total  Drive space . You have to complete the quick process before February 17th, and the extra gigabytes will appear around the end of the month. The offer is only open to personal accounts, though, and while Google Apps for Work and Google Apps for Education users can't boost their space, it's probably not a bad idea to double-check those settings anyway. Launching the world’s first 48K 360° video with Xperia Z5 Compact

Image
After unveiling the world’s best camera in a leading smartphone*, the world’s first 4K smartphone** – we asked ourselves – “what comes next?”… As part of our recent photography trip to Rise Ski & Snowboard Festival in Les Deux Alpes, France, we created a 360 degree video shot entirely on 12x Xperia Z5 Compact devices, each filming simultaneously in 4K (by our count, that’s a total of 48Ks). The short film is the result of an ambitious, creative R&D experiment, where each Xperia Z5 Compact device was mounted on a custom 3D printed rig. We set about capturing scenes from the slopes, including freestylers performing jaw dropping tricks in the park, high-speed racers on a giant slalom course and the stunning panorama looking out across some of the Alp’s best known peaks. The footage from each phone was painstakingly edited together to create our first 360 degree video, showcasing the unique capabilities of Xperia Z5’s camera technology. It’s fully interactive, so
