iPad Pro updates

Apple’s ‘Let Loose’ event gave us our first look at its long-awaited iPad Pro updates: 13-inch and 11-inch models with OLED displays and the thinnest design yet. Oh, and the front-facing camera is now in the correct (landscape) position for video calls. We also got a look at the M4 chip. Apple says the chip’s CPU is 50 percent faster than the M2, making it “an outrageously powerful chip for AI.” We also got a look at new accessories like the Apple Pencil Pro and updated Magic Keyboard. Here’s everything you missed.

New iMac

Image
Apple could release multiple new iMacs in 2024 with a focus on new Apple Silicon processors and improved integrated technologies. One of these releases may be an iMac Pro revival with Pro Display XDR-like features. However, the 27-inch iMac line has been discontinued, so it may be some time before a refresh occurs. Rumors surrounding a larger, new iMac were sparked when the 24-inch iMac launched in 2021. Initially, reports pointed to a similar redesign for a 27-inch or bigger iMac with multiple color options and an Apple Silicon processor The early rumors never panned out, and Apple hasn't refreshed the 24-inch iMac either. Now, it seems the M3 could herald multiple new iMac models. Conflicting rumors and reports are nothing new for unannounced Apple products. Some expected an iMac Pro revival with Apple Silicon, but since the Mac Pro is now running M2 Ultra, it's less likely. It isn't clear what Apple's plans are for the larger iMacs. The 27-inch iMac was discontinue...

Apple's satellite emergency call now works in Switzerland

Image
Apple's emergency call service via satellite is now also available in Switzerland. You need an iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 with iOS 17. From today you can also use Apple's satellite emergency call in Switzerland and Spain. The company announced this in a press release on Friday morning. The feature allows emergency services to be alerted in areas without cellular reception. It works with all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models and is built directly into the iOS operating system. The service will be free for two years, after which it is unclear how much it will cost. How it works When you dial 911 and have no reception, the iPhone automatically switches to satellite mode. It only works outdoors and you need as clear a view of the sky as possible. Clouds are no problem, but large buildings can be an obstacle. Important to know: To use the service in Switzerland, you need iOS 17. Since the bandwidth via satellite is not sufficient for a voice call, a text message is transmitted instead. I...

Apple ships tvOS 17 with FaceTime and Apple Fitness Plus changes

Image
Apple's new tvOS 17 has dropped — here are many of the new features contained within. It's a well-documented fact that tvOS doesn't get the same robust yearly updates as iOS or macOS — but this year has changed that. Apple has overhauled significant parts of the Apple TV's operating system with tvOS 17, adding a breadth of new features to the set-top box. FaceTime, Continuity Camera, Reactions With the advent of tvOS 17, those running a second-generation Apple TV 4K or newer updated to tvOS 17 will be able to use FaceTime. This is done via Continuity Camera, which allows users to use an iPhone or an iPad as a dedicated webcam for the Apple TV. With this update, Apple has brought full Continuity Camera API support to the Apple TV, enabling video integration into apps. Popular video conferencing platforms Cisco WebEx and Zoom have promised to hit the set-top box by year's end. Apple TV now includes a new feature called Reactions. These are video effects that can be ...

Millions of iPhone users urged to download new update to protect iCloud data

Image
Tech experts warn that users ignoring the clever new iPhone feature could risk personal data falling into the wrong hands. A new iPhone update could be the vital difference to helping Apple users keep their private images and texts safe. The clever iPhone feature has only just been added to Apple as part of the iOS 16.3 update which began rolling out across the world this week. The Advanced Data Protection feature helps protect users iCloud back ups. Most iPhone users opt to back up their iCloud content automatically, in an effort to ensure their personal data is not lost. However, tech experts in the past have warned this data could fall into the wrong hands if not protected. The normal iCloud backup system is called the Standard Data Protection and works through using encryption. This means your data is unreadable unless you have the exact correct ‘key’. “The encryption keys from your trusted devices are secured in Apple data centres,” Apple explains on their website. “So Apple can d...

Apple just completely redesigned iCloud.com, and it looks a lot better

Image
Apple launched a totally new iCloud.com design The iCloud.com site is useful if you want to quickly access some of the apps or services that are otherwise on your Mac, iPhone or iPad, particularly if you’re on a computer you don’t own or are using a PC. When you’re on iCloud.com, you’ll now see widgets with a tile for different apps such as Photos, iCloud Drive, Notes and Reminders. It replaces the old, stale-looking iCloud homepage where there were just icons for those apps. So, for example, now you can see recent photos you snapped, the latest emails in your Mail inbox, the latest files you’ve opened in Drive and new Notes you’ve written. You can also customize the homepage however you like, placing certain items, such as your email or photo gallery, in specific places. There’s a plus sign on the top upper right side of the screen that you can tap to create a new email, note, calendar event and reminder. Or you can tap it to create a new Pages, Numbers or Keynote document. Ther...

Apple TV 4K updated with A15 Bionic and Ethernet

Image
Apple has launched an updated version of the Apple TV 4K media player. The new model features a faster processor, improved HDR support, and better connectivity. The new Apple TV 4K features the A15 Bionic SoC. Apple does not mention the core counts or clock speeds, which makes it difficult to ascertain if it is identical to the one on the iPhone 14 models or a cut down version. The company claims it has 50% faster CPU and 30% faster GPU performance compared to the A12 Bionic on the previous generation model. The new model adds support for the HDR10+ standard alongside the existing Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG formats. While HDR10+ is mostly similar to Dolby Vision in spec, it is vastly less popular, with the only major service offering HDR10+ content being Amazon Prime Video. It's possible, however, that Apple plans to start offering its own library of content in HDR10+ alongside other formats. This may be due to the fact that several TV manufacturers, most notably Samsung, do not...

Zuckerberg really wants iPhone users to shift to WhatsApp

Image
A campaign from Meta-owned WhatsApp says iMessage is less secure, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg pushing incorrect claims about the Apple messaging service. An advertisement displayed above Penn Station is making the rounds with heads of Meta and WhatsApp pushing the message. It suggests that WhatsApp is a more secure and private alternative to iMessage. The advertisement shows text bubbles models after Apple's Messages app, one in green and one in blue. A third bubble shows "private bubble" suggesting that WhatsApp is a truly private platform. Mark Zuckerberg posted an image of this advertisement on his Instagram with text calling WhatsApp "a far more private and secure" platform. Cross-platform encrypted messaging with Android and disappearing chats are the reasonings behind his claim. The post also calls out Apple's iCloud backups containing iMessage encryption keys. However, it incorrectly suggests that iPhone users do not have an option for end-to-end encry...

Image
Basic display on the Apple Watch Ultra with Oceanic+ app The Apple Watch Ultra, which goes on sale on 23 September, can be used as a dive-computer at depths down to 40m with the addition of a new version of the Oceanic+ app already used with iPhones. It is also certified to EN13319, the international standard for depth gauges and other dive accessories.  The watch has its own basic built-in Depth app, which shows current time, depth and maximum depth while under water (to a maximum 40m), but Apple has also linked up with Huish Outdoors, which owns the Oceanic brand, to turn the Apple Watch Ultra into what they both describe as a “capable dive-computer”. The best wireless earbuds to buy right now

Image
The best from Apple, Samsung, Sony,  Beats, and more It’s hard to buy a bad pair of wireless earbuds these days. The market has come a long way since the early era of true wireless earbuds when we had to deal with mediocre sound quality and unreliable performance, all for the sake of ditching wires. Things are much different now. After several product generations of learned lessons, companies like Sony, Apple, Samsung, and others are releasing their most impressive earbuds yet. You can get phenomenal noise cancellation and sound quality in the premium tier of earbuds if you’re willing to spend big. But those aren’t always the most important criteria for everyone: maybe you’re looking for the perfect fitness earbuds or for a set that works just as well for Zoom calls as for playing your favorite playlists and podcasts. Tech companies are increasingly making their earbuds work best with their own products through exclusive features and functionality, so that’s another thing to...
