Sony's Android 12 update includes a welcome change you'll probably never see

Image
Quick settings that are actually quick Android 12 is Google's most significant transformation to its mobile operating system since Material Design first debuted in 2014. Unfortunately, not every change has been for the better. The quick settings menu got a new Internet tile, combining all of Android's various Wi-Fi and mobile data options into a single place. Of course, that requires additional taps not found in previous versions, forcing some users to push ADB commands to their phones to restore the previous layout. If you happen to have one of Sony's recent phones, you'll be glad to know its take on Android 12 undoes this change — though, it seems, not entirely on purpose. The Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III started getting their respective software updates a couple of weeks ago, with some eagle-eyed users over at the Xperia subreddit managing to spot a big improvement (via XDA Developers). Unlike Pixel devices, Sony's Android 12 update includes separate toggles f...

Best Sony phones 2022: find the right Xperia for you

Image
Experience Xperia with the best Sony phones Our ranking of the best Sony phones is easily topped by the Sony Xperia 1 III now. It's very expensive so it won't be for everyone, but that's where the rest of our guide comes in. Picking out the other best Sony phones can be tricky because the company's naming system isn't particularly clear when it comes to separating the top-end handsets from the more budget-friendly choices. For instance, Sony launched the Sony Xperia 5 III - a high-end handset with a smaller screen than its previous flagship device, the Sony Xperia 1 III - albeit at a lower price. It can be confusing but, fortunately, we've helped decipher the confusing naming conventions so that you can learn all about the many quite impressive Sony phones out there. Besides these aforementioned phones, there's also the Sony Xperia ZX3 stoically sticking to the bottom of our list.  Each ranking includes a complete rundown of what makes them so good and wha...

Launching the world’s first 48K 360° video with Xperia Z5 Compact

Image
After unveiling the world’s best camera in a leading smartphone*, the world’s first 4K smartphone** – we asked ourselves – “what comes next?”… As part of our recent photography trip to Rise Ski & Snowboard Festival in Les Deux Alpes, France, we created a 360 degree video shot entirely on 12x Xperia Z5 Compact devices, each filming simultaneously in 4K (by our count, that’s a total of 48Ks). The short film is the result of an ambitious, creative R&D experiment, where each Xperia Z5 Compact device was mounted on a custom 3D printed rig. We set about capturing scenes from the slopes, including freestylers performing jaw dropping tricks in the park, high-speed racers on a giant slalom course and the stunning panorama looking out across some of the Alp’s best known peaks. The footage from each phone was painstakingly edited together to create our first 360 degree video, showcasing the unique capabilities of Xperia Z5’s camera technology. ...

Sony's new sensor could bring DSLR-like autofocus to phones

Image
While there's speculation that  multi-sensor  phone cameras are the  next big thing , Sony has just launched a sensor that will likely make its smartphone cameras better  soon . The latest  Exmor RS IMX230  is a so-called stacked CMOS sensor that squeezes an effective 21-megapixels into a 1/2.4-inch sized form factor. The killer feature, however, is built-in 192-point phase-detection autofocus, which will keep fast-moving subjects sharp. The new chip also has integrated HDR for high-res stills and 4K video to save shots that are overly backlit or in shadow. The new Exmor RS model will appear in April next year, perhaps in time for Sony's next flagship handset, which would give it one of the best Android smartphone camera options.
