What do people earn in Switzerland?

Image
From baker to banker, Swiss workers earn salaries that must be put into perspective. Like anywhere in the world, salaries in Switzerland vary depending on factors like education, experience and location. Each year,  canton Zurich’s Office for Economy and Labour publishes a guide outlining salaries for nearly every profession imaginable. This year’s 800-page  Lohnbuch 2017 (in German) compiles salary data such as minimum suggested wages plus typical salary ranges based on age and experience. You can learn more about working conditions in Switzerland in  swissinfo.ch’s guide to salarie s , which covers everything from pay and deductions to contracts and working hours. While the figures might seem high – especially in some branches – it’s important to remember that Switzerland also has a high cost of living. For example, people spend about a third of their income on rent alone. Source: swissinfo.ch

Warner Bros. Is Considering a Return to The Matrix

Image
It’s still not clear what shape the project will take, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix, the iconic 1999 sci-fi movie that is considered one of the most original films in cinematic history, with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment. Sources say there is potential interest in Michael B. Jordan to star, but much must be done before the project is ready to go.  At this point, the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are not involved and the nature of their potential engagement with a new version has not been determined. Certainly, Warners would want the two filmmakers to give at minimum a blessing to the nascent project. The studio had no comment. Joel Silver, who produced the original trilogy, is said to have approached Warners about the idea of mining The Matrix for a potential new film. However, Silver sold h...

4G LTE is Fading Away as Verizon Publishes Its 5G Radio Specs in the US

Image
Verizon started the 4G LTE ball rolling in the United States when the 4G LTE network was designed and still hoping to be the first in the United States to roll out the 5G Network. Yesterday, Verizon said it has completed its 5G radio specs; these specs will be used by manufacturers of Smartphones, suppliers of parts used to build out the 5G network, and others helping Verizon roll out and maintain 5G service. If you don't know before, data speeds for 5G are supposed to be approximately 100 times faster than that of 4G LTE. In February, Verizon partnered with Samsung on a 5G trial. And now that it has published its 5G specs, we could see the other major U.S. carriers looking forward to catch up with Verizon. Having learned from the experience of building its 4G LTE pipeline, here is what Adam Koeppe, Verizon's vice president of network technology planning said - "The completion of the 5G radio specification is a key milestone toward the development of a com...

An 8K Time-lapse of Patagonia

Image
If there’s one thing you can rely on us photographers for, it’s bleeding every last drop of quality out of our work. We feverishly pursue clarity like a commission-only ophthalmologist and over the last couple of years, time-lapse photography has been the most blatant exhibition of this.  Photographer Martin Heck  has presumably seen the bar that has been set for high quality time-lapses, and then promptly vaulted over it.  ‘Patagonia 8K’ is footage of Chile and Argentina shot over six weeks. What makes this special is not just the content and composition of the frames, but that the 100,000 images that make up this video are shot using the medium format  Pentax 645Z . The sense of scale and depth in this time-lapse is unparalleled and genuinely like nothing I have seen before. The only complaint from me is that most people – myself included – can’t even watch this masterpiece in its native resolution and quality, which is a tragedy in its ...

Now you can finally use WhatsApp on Mac and Windows

Image
Here's how WhatsApp looks on the desktop. WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps on earth, introduced a fully functionally desktop app for Mac and Windows on Tuesday. The Facebook-owned messaging behemoth already offers a web version of its service, but this is the first time it's had a native app designed specifically for Macs and Windows PCs. "Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device,"  the company said on its blog . The desktop app supports notifications and keyboard shortcuts. You can  download WhatsApp's desktop app directly from its website  on Mac and Windows. WhatsApp has over 1 billion monthly active users, which makes its reach only second to Facebook itself.
